SIERRA LEONE
Sierra Leone is the poorest country in the world according
to the Human Development Index, despite its large reserves of diamonds. Low
agricultural output has lead to high levels of food insecurity. The
unavailability of adequate health care and education facilities have
intensified the privation of the people of Sierra Leone, as they deal with
rampant malaria infections which are the major cause of death of children under
the age of five.
The population of Sierra
Leone is struggling to rebuild after a decade-long civil war that ended in
2002. Significant numbers of people displaced during the war, former combatants
and victims of the war’s intense violence have all found it difficult to
acquire stable livelihoods. Muslims make up approximately sixty percent of the
population.

DETAILS OF FLOOD AND SIDR DONATION 2007-08 O
1. ‘Bangladesh
Army Relief Fund’ has
come into being with the Government approval on 20 August 2007 initially to
help the Aug-Sep 07 flood victims in Bangladesh. As the process of receiveing
and distributing donations to the flood distressed people was on, Cyclone
‘SIDR’ struck the coastal areas of Bangladesh with enormous magnitude.
People from all walks of life and organizations started handing over donations
to Bangladesh Army for relief and rehabilitation works in the SIDR affected areas.
For continued donations of people and organizations, necessity of keeping
account of the received donations under a separate ‘head’ was felt by this
Headquarters. Accordingly this Headquarters started maintaining a separate
‘head’ under ‘BD Army Relief Fund’ since 19 Nov 2007 for the purpose of
receiving donations intended exclusively for the SIDR affected areas. For
accuracy and for the ease of account keeping these two ‘heads’ are being
maintained separately under ‘Bangladesh Army Relief Fund’. The money/donations
received have been disbursed quickly to the Army Field Formations deployed in
the affected areas. Military personnel responsible have ensured proper
distribution of the donations to the needy through ‘Disaster Management
Committees’.
Assistance to Flood Victims
2. A total amount of Taka 4,59,62,354.50 has been received from 102 donors within time period from 20 August 2007 to 12 November 2007 for relief and rehabilitation of the Flood victims. The summary of the total donation and distribution is given below:

2011. Photo by Kahoku Shimpo
The anniversary of
Japan’s 3/11 is approaching. “3/11” is what the Japanese call the series of
disasters which struck northern Japan in March of 2011; the earthquake,
tsunami, and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant meltdown. It is time yet
again to examine what happened, how it happened, what the prognosis is for the
future. Japan is the only country in the world to have suffered two
atomic attacks by a foreign power during World War II and a third, a homegrown
nuclear disaster fomented by its own Nuclear Power Company, just two years ago.

Teresa devoted her life to helping the poor, the sick and the dying. As a Roman
Catholic nun, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta,
India. By the time of Mother Teresa’s death in 1997 her humanitarian efforts
had spread to 123 countries with 610 missions. The great love and compassion
that Blessed Teresa of Calcutta held for the poor and helpless of society has
made her an international figure and the focus of many Catholic books and
materials.
MOTHER TERESA (1910–1997)
was born in Skopje (present-day Macedonia), and joined the Sisters of Loreto in
Dublin in 1928. She left the Loreto order in 1948 to begin the Missionaries of
Charity in Calcutta. Her service to the poorest of the poor became her life’s
work. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and was beatified in 2003.
Editor of Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light, FATHER BRIAN KOLODIEJCHUK, M.C.,
Ph.D., was associated with Mother Teresa for twenty years and is now director
of the Mother Teresa Center, which has offices in California, Mexico, India,
and Ital

The word 'Buddha' is a
title and not a name. It means 'one who is awake' in the sense of having 'woken
up to reality'.Buddha, means 'the enlightened one'. And Gautam Buddha was one
of the greatest religious teachers that the world has seen. His teachings
expounded in Buddhism, are immensely popular in India ,Thailand ,Burma, China,
Japan and other South Eastern Countries. The
Buddha was born in 563 B.C. as Siddhartha to Shuddhodana the king of
Kapilavastu in Nepal. His mother Mayadevi expired when he was just 7 days old
and he was brought up by his stepmother Gautami. Siddhartha was made to lead a
very sheltered life as the astrologers had predicted that he would give up
worldly pleasures to follow a different path. The King wanted to avoid this at
all costs and so did not let him out of the palace. He hoped that
Siddhartha would one day become king. The
royal family belonged to the Gautama Gothra of the Sakya clan of the solar
race. Their kingdom Kapilvastu was between the Nepalese foothills and the river
Raptu. The Shakayas were priestly-warriors, wealthy knights and landowners.
When Siddhartha had grown into an intelligent young man, he
ventured out of his palace one day, and chanced on a few sights that changed
the course of his life. During one of his few excursions, Siddhartha saw four
things, which opened his eyes towards the harsh realities of life. He saw an
old man suffering from the frailties of age, a sick man suffering from disease,
a beggar suffering from hunger and he saw a dead body. All these events
affected him immensely and Siddhartha finally came to the conclusion that
nothing is permanent in life. The infirmities of old age, the pangs of hunger,
the pain of sickness and end of life brought sufferings that he had never
experienced. All these events in his life forced him to search for truth that
eventually changed his life. This made Siddhartha very sad and he started to
rethink his life and began to try to fathom the reason of existence. Seeing him
so thoughtful, his father decided to get him married and get his mind off such
serious topics. He was married to a beautiful princess called Yashodhara,
who soon gave birth to a son whom they called Rahul.
